League of Legends World Championship 2016 - Dates, teams and other details

Riot Games' best MOBA players are back on the pitch.

We have now entered the last quarter of 2016, and like every year one of the most anticipated events in the videogame world is about to begin: the League of Legends World Championship.

16 teams among new and renowned are ready to compete to demonstrate all their skills in a tournament that will set fire to the whole month of October for fans of the MOBA branded Riot Games. The 2016 LoL World Championship will be held in North America and the date of the fateful final is set for 29 October, the day when the two best teams that have brought home the most victories will battle for the world cup as well as a prize pool of $ 1.000.000.

Precisely on the prize pool front, this year there is an interesting novelty: thanks to a crowdfunding system, 25% of the earnings from the sales of the Championship Zed skin and the ward Championship will further increase the final prize. A similar thing should also apply to the purchases of the icons of the various teams, even if Riot Games was not particularly clear in this case. Fans who, in some way, intend to support the various teams and the tournament itself, can therefore contribute by purchasing the skin and ward in question.

The various dollar prizes will be divided as follows:

  • World Champions - $ 1.000.000 USD
  • 2nd place - $ 250.000 USD
  • 3rd / 4th place - $ 150.000 USD
  • 5rd / 8th place - $ 75.000 USD
  • 9rd / 12th place - $ 45.000 USD
  • 13rd / 16th place - $ 25.000 USD

Among the great absentees of this year the Fnatic, one of the most popular and well-known teams in League of Legends and winners in 2011, which sadly failed to qualify for the tournament. The highly acclaimed and feared Korean team makes its presence again SKT T1, which already boasts two world championships won - 2013 and 2015 - and which, probably, also in this championship will give a lot of trouble. It must be said, however, that the lesser-known teams (as well as the most famous) could turn out to be unexpected hard bones and could deprive the Koreans of the title of stronger players, who knows.

But when will the various groups be played and which teams qualify for the 2016 World Cup?

First of all, the matches will officially start starting from September 29th and will be streamed simultaneously on the League of Legends website, Twitch and YouTube. The program is the following:

  • Group Week 1: 29 September - 2 October
  • Group Week 2: 6-9 October
