Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2011 review

Hunting for predators in Africa!

Tested version Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii.

Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2011 is a hunting simulation with hints of survival horror which, thanks to sound effects of extraordinary relief and an atmosphere of continuous suspense, manages to eliminate the obviousness that the title had been carrying for some time.

The plot of the game is that of an exciting adventure in search of the most dangerous predators in the world in the heart of Africa already the scene of countless adventure novels and where the survival instinct of the two protagonists, the young hunter Cole Rainsford and his father , can change the fate of the fierce duel between life and death, in search of the final clash between man and nature.

The game offers two game modes and allows it to be played with both a Dualshock controller and the new gun-shaped controller called "Top Shot Elite" that Activision sells as a bundle with the Xbox 360 and Wii version, while for the PS3 version. it is sold separately at the price of 29 euros.

Story

The story offers 12-13 hours of exciting missions that see us participate in different locations around the world. It goes from snow-capped mountain ranges to desert areas to dark caves, all following a plot thread that is narrated step by step.

After the story mode, the game offers us an extra difficulty level and a mode called "Gallery". This last mode structured mainly for the "Top Shot Elite" provides us with a series of missions where the only purpose will be to shoot on everything that moves reaching a certain "score" that will allow us to unlock new missions.

Each mission will record our results and insert them in turn in a world ranking where we can consult it at any time to see our position online.

Picking up the rifle

Using a simple controller the adventure of Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2011 runs away without many hitches, in fact the controls via the Dualshock are perfectly calibrated, the options will allow us to set the movement sensitivity to have a faster or slower movement according to the your needs.

The test made through the "Top Shot Elite" during the story mode however, failed to obtain the same result as the Dualshock, often running into a calibration that is too approximate and very inaccurate.
No problem when the predators on the screen are few and at a considerable distance, the problem comes when we find ourselves attacked by a pack of wolves or tigers, where speed and precision are essential, in that case the controls were excessively slow despite it is however possible to set different parameters regarding sensitivity. In fact, if the "Top Shot Elite" during the story mode was too inaccurate, in the "Gallery" mode it was more precise and calibrated as if the same mode had been specifically designed taking into account the characteristics of the new controller.
However, to master the “Top Shot Elite” well, it will take a lot of time and a lot of practice, with the consequence that the whole title could soon get bored for a casual gamer.

Colors and sounds of nature

Graphically Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2011 is the best hunting game ever seen on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The care of the scenery, the lighting effects of the outdoor landscapes and the caves are absolutely excellent. The animals, reproduced in a perfect way in every minimum aspect, move with very important animations, offering a noteworthy degree of challenge, thanks also to a revised and significantly improved “AI” sector compared to the past.

The sound sector, certainly the most successful aspect of the title, is able to perfectly reproduce the feeling of suspense with music that is nothing short of amazing. The effect of the branches breaking, the chirping of birds, the howling of nocturnal predators, is reproduced in such a way as to give the player the feeling of really being in the wilds of Africa.

The only discordant note in the sound sector lies in the dubbing in Spanish which is not particularly brilliant.

Final comment

Overall Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2011 is a game that far exceeds the sufficiency and is able to capture players even if not accustomed to the genre, particularly niche. In fact, Dangerous Hunts 2011 is not a simple hunting game, not even the classic shooter with gun on tracks, obviously linear. The freedom of movement and the rhythm that the game offers make it rich in variables and what benefits from it is undoubtedly the gameplay which is sufficiently deep. The story mode is around 12-13 hours of play, but to prolong the game experience there are numerous extras included in the Gallery mode and an additional difficulty level that will only be enabled at the end of the game. The impression obtained from this new title of the Cabela's series is all in all more than positive, even if we would have expected greater attention in the calibration of the controls of the “Top Shot Elite”, a real novelty of this edition. For all those who love hunting simulation, and after all if you have read this far you surely are, this year Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2011 has managed to take a leap forward compared to the past by presenting a very valid product.
