Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - Campaign Special

Infinity Ward is back on its creature and it shows: the campaign of the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is brutal and hard to swallow, like in the old days.

The last Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has only been out for a few days and while we are gnawing at multiplayer for a review that is as complete as possible, we're done there single player campaign and we're here to tell you about it.

The Modern Warfare trilogy had got us used to short but intense stories, able to tell the modern war without filters. In fact, some missions of that saga had caused a stir, like "No Russian", which showed firsthand a terrorist attack. This new chapter of the series stands from this point of view in continuity with the first three, despite being in effect a reboot.

Indeed, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare manages to do even better of the previous chapters, slapping the player several times with bitter morsels, difficult to swallow. The title also renders the more credible story and less biased than in the past, although there is still work to be done in this respect.

Contemporary history

Beyond the technicalities, impressive graphics - at times close to photorealism, accompanied by acting and facial expressions at the level of the best videogame productions - and an enveloping and realistic sound sector, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign is undoubtedly one of the best in the series. The story is set in these days, between the end of October and the beginning of November 2019. This tells the conflict in the fictitious nation of Urzikstan between the Al-Qatala terrorist cell, local militias, the Russian army and British special forces.

The story is rhythmic, full of events, adrenaline-pumping. Each mission is to be lived in tension, anxious, although there is still some defect that periodically interrupts the suspension of disbelief. It remains however an extremely immersive first-person experience, able to drag you into the mesh of its plot and capture you, even to the point to let you play all in one breath.

In the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare campaign, situations are truly varied and sadly realistic. Some missions will struggle to forget. In the game you find yourself trying to foil an attack in the heart of London, as well as in the role of a trapped child among the rubble of a bombing in the middle east. Infinity Ward's latest work there is no scruples. Not afraid to show the murder of a child or a woman taken away to be raped. Nor in showing torture, harassment, genocide and persecution.

War never changes… But the way of representing it can still improve

The work lends itself to various interpretations and it is incredibly current. It is not difficult, for example, to make the fictional country of Urzikstan coincide with the Kurdistan. The country so coveted by the Kurdish people has several traits in common with the one represented in the game. But even more his people seem fight against the yoke of the rulers likewise, trying to shake off the label of terrorists attached to it by the West.

I'm a little sorry, honestly, about the choice to represent the Russians as the ruthless and allies (British and American) as the saviors, once again. Reality certainly has many more shades than this clear distinction between black and white represented. Sorry even more for the alleged historical rewrite on which so much has rightly been argued, about the highway of death. The real story testifies to a US bombing, while the fictional work tells of a Russian. Certainly a fall in style, although the plot of the game is obviously invented from scratch and differently contextualized, as claimed by the developers in defense of their choice.

However, net of these flaws and small falls in style, the story of this new chapter of the FPS series is memorable. Not only scores the return of a newfound importance for the single player, but also a renewed ability to write the script for a video game. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare tells an adult, heavy, brutal plot, who knows how to involve in his most excited moments and upset in the most violent and realistic ones. Infinity Ward is truly back and has developed what it undoubtedly is one of the most beautiful Call of Duty ever. The first in a new trilogy, which we are already eager to know how it will continue.
