Nintendo acquires Next Level Games

With a press release a few days ago, Nintendo announced the closing of the agreement, expected by March 1, for the acquisition of 100% of the shares of Next Level Games.

Founded in 2002, it is a programming studio specializing in the development of console videogames.

Canadian Software House based in Vancouver, not surprisingly: the city is regarded as the capital of interactive game companies. In 2020, there were 170 gaming studios in the city, including big companies like EA Canada, The Coalition, and Kabam.

Next Level Games already well known in the Nintendo galaxy, having already developed important titles for the Japanese company in the past, including:

  • Luigi's Mansion 3 for Nintendo Switch (here our review)
  • Super Mario Strikers for Game Cube
  • Mario Strikers Charged and Punch-Out !! for Wii
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Metroid Prime: Federation Force for 3DS

The Nintendo Statement:

“Most recently, Next Level Games worked exclusively on developing software titles for the 3DS and Switch consoles, including titles from the acclaimed Luigi's Mansion video game series.

The shares of Next Level Games are currently held entirely by its owners-directors and employees. A number of CEO-owners recently determined it was the right time to sell their shares, and Next Level Games has therefore begun to explore potential sales transactions.

The completion of the acquisition will help ensure the availability of Next Level Games development resources, including development experience, as well as facilitate an expected improvement in the speed and quality of development. "

Rumors have been going on for some time about the release of a new sports title for the flagship console of the great N. Considering that the Canadian studio has already produced sports for Nintendo, who knows if this acquisition is a further proof in this regard, perhaps for a new Super Mario Strikers?
