Journey through the 20+ endings of Idea Factory's Otome game

Developed by Design Factory and Otomate, subsection of Idea Factory dedicated to Otome games, Amnesia Memories is the first title in the Amnesia series to arrive in the West. The brand, which started on PSP in 2011, has in fact met with some success in Japan in recent years, so much so that it has given life to an anime consisting of 12 episodes and a fairly solid fan base.

What kind of game is it?

Amnesia Memories is one visual novel designed primarily for female audiences, which develops 5 romantic stories around a silent and nameless protagonist, who has lost all memory of her past due to the encounter-clash with a spirit named Orion. The pink component is therefore predominant and the reactions of the heroine, deprived in the fight even of a large part of her personality, are now stereotyped of the shōjo genre and reverse harem.

Not surprisingly, then, that in his I travel through the five parallel worlds where he leads five different lives, the heroine simply gets carried away by the current rather than making strong decisions. It is a practically obligatory choice both from the narrative premises and from the canons of the genre of belonging. What pleasantly surprises, however, is the presence of a rather marked noir component in practically all the stories told, with the characters of the story characterized just enough to have their own and recognizable personality.

The game's drawings and artwork are really beautiful. Too bad for the presence of backgrounds perhaps a little too minimalist and an audio with a bad sync between the Japanese voices and the (few) facial movements during the dialogues. Pleasant soundtrack that accompanies the narration.

Release Date

The game was released in Europe on August 25, 2015 on Steam (€ 27,99, 40% discount at launch); the next day it also landed on the PS Store for PlayStation Vita (€ 29,99). We had the opportunity to try both versions and were a little perplexed by the inability shown by Idea Factory to implement, once again, an entirely touch screen game menu on PS Vita. Overall, however, the few touch features are the only differences between the portable version and the one for Desktop PC and are limited to the choice of answers and the progress of the dialogues.

Gameplay and Walktrough

The game flow is based solely on a series of dialogue choices typical of dating simulators, which will modify some parameters of agreement with the characters (Affection, Trust, Suspicion and, sometimes, Doubt). The level of these parameters determines the progress of each chosen route, following 4 different endings for each world. Also important are the messages and calls received on the heroin's cell phone, which give clues to the history and events prior to the loss of memory.

All the stories start on August XNUMXst and come to an end in about a month. When an ending is reached, the progress is saved to the file system and the player is forced to select the New Game option or continue from a previous save. Upon reaching certain objectives, images, videos and new game menu items are unlocked.

There are also two minigames (a variant of the Chinese morra and air hockey) and 26 trophies (the platinum guide will probably be the subject of a specific article later)
