Fortnite Review - Battle Royale

Apocalypse!

It is undeniable that “battle royale” games are one of the hottest video game genres of the moment: the overwhelming success of Playersunknown's Battleground on Steam has now opened the doors to this new genre. Ready to welcome throngs of players eager to face each other on huge battlefields, right down to the last man.

And it is precisely in the wake of this important success that Epic Games, creator of the Unreal Engine and the Gears of War series, among other things, has decided to add a Battle Royale mode to Fortnite, currently in early access on PC and console. completely free-2-play, beating the time, at least for the console market, the arrival of PUbG.

A game designed for everyone

Becoming familiar with the basic mechanics and the cartoon style, like all "battle royale" even Fortnite has a really important game immediacy, allowing everyone, whatever their level of confidence with third-person shooters, to be able to compete in the top positions in the standings, right from the first games. The structure is definitely inspired by PUBG, so we will literally be parachuted together with 99 other players from an aircraft - in this case a minibus equipped with retractable - on an uninhabited island full of various types of buildings. Just like in the game's PVE mode, the ability to build protections, walls and real forts has been added, especially useful in the final stages of the games.

We can in fact divide the games (in single or group that is) in two phases: the first is dedicated to the loot in the various houses and shacks scattered around the map, with the sole aim of acquiring the best armaments present in the game and, if you are lucky, even to equip themselves with a shield (in the game represented in the form of a potion) in order to be much more resistant in clashes against other players. The second phase is instead dedicated to the choice of the place, in which to "wait" for the players, as the playable area narrows. It is possible in some cases to organize real ambushes, also possible thanks to the presence of traps to be applied on the ceilings or floors. And it is precisely in this second phase that the possibility of creating buildings, thanks to the materials recovered in the map, becomes more interesting than ever, allowing you to create real forts from which to eliminate the other players as you get closer and closer to victory.

Another very interesting feature is the subdivision of weapons by rarity. Generally characteristic of MMO games, it allows to give a further nuance to the game, thus justifying the continuous search for an increasingly rare and powerful loot, in order to always find an advantage over the opponents. What is certain is that this Fortnite Battle Royale mode shows clear signs of "youth", appearing in certain stages still unripe and with very large room for improvement. First of all, the map will be improved from the point of view of contents and loot points to make it more and more interesting, secondly the addition of vehicles, already scattered on the territory, but not piloted.

The important thing is that Epic Games does not simply try to emulate Bluehole colleagues by copying features and modes from the aforementioned Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, giving an original touch to your game, satisfying and meeting the demands of users who, especially in games like these, it really is a fundamental part of game development; and now we leave you to our gameplay that will make you have an even more precise idea of the feeling of this game, to you and enjoy!

Final comment: Fortnite - Battle Royale certainly stands out as the dominator of the battle royale games landscape on the console market both for the obvious lack of competition (at least for the moment), and for the game formula which is certainly interesting; the litmus test will certainly face the arrival of competing games but above all continue to support the game by adding features, maps and content that continue to keep users interested.
