Preliminary information

How to receive emails on your mobile

Before starting to tell you about the apps that you can use on your smartphone or tablet to read your e-mail, I want to give you some information about it. You must know, in fact, that the mail you usually receive on your computer by reading it from Webmail can be managed on mobile devices after configuration via protocols IMAP / POP (for receiving mail) e SMTP (for the outgoing one).

The difference between protocol IMAP e POP lies in the fact that the first — more modern and therefore recommended — is designed for the use of mail on multiple devices at the same time and synchronizes messages on all devices; the POP one, on the other hand, is more dated and provides (except for backup functions offered by some providers) the download of mail on a single device with consequent deletion of messages from the server (therefore making it impossible to synchronize them on multiple devices simultaneously). If you want to learn more about this topic, I recommend reading this tutorial of mine.

As things stand now, luckily for you, all this talk can fail, as an e-mail provider, like gmail e Outlook, they allow to synchronize emails on mobile phone easily with modern clients using username and password without having to enter any configuration data. Basically, therefore, the mailboxes are configured automatically in IMAP.

Having said that, let's see which email clients you can download to your Android or iPhone/iPad smartphone or tablet to read your emails.

Gmail (Android/iOS/iPadOS)

How to receive emails on your mobile

Among the best email clients available for smartphones, I definitely recommend you gmail. This application, developed by Google, is distributed completely free on Android and iOS/iPadOS. If you weren't aware of it, it allows you not only to read emails from mail accounts gmail, but also to configure those of third-party providers, such as Outlook, Yahoo and any email service via the IMAP/SMTP parameters, which I told you about in the previous chapter.

It should be noted that on iPhone and iPad, the official Gmail app is the only one that allows you to get push notifications (therefore in real time) for messages received securely, as the app Email default does not support this function (it only allows you to receive notifications based on periodic checks of the mailbox at pre-set time intervals, which consume a lot of battery) and third-party clients to allow push notifications make all communications travel on their servers, which represents a potential privacy risk (so it is not advisable to use it).

That said, to use the Gmail app on Android, go to the Play Store and press the button Install (the Gmail app may already be installed "standard" and you can find its icon on the home screen). On iPhoneinstead, via the App Store, press the button Get and unblock the download and installation via Face ID, touch ID o Password iCloud account.

Once this is done, start the app gmail and press pulsating Log in to set up an email account. If you have already registered Google accounts on your smartphone, select one from the list and that's it. If not, press on the wording Add another account to configure one.

You can always add a new email account in the Gmail app at any time by tapping on miniature at the top right and pressing the button Add another account. If, among the services in the list, you have chosen voice Other, you will also need to enter the parameters IMAP e SMTP for correct communication with the e-mail server, which I told you about in this tutorial.

Once you've set up your email account, you'll be able to access the app's main screen gmail. If you should receive on-screen messages about consent to access smartphone features, such as the notifications, you agree.

You will be able to read all e-mail messages received in the folder main. To access all other folders, such as the one containing i messages sent, drafts or the spam, press the menu icon at the top left. To write a new email, instead, press the button Write che trovi in basso.
