Victor Vran Overkill Edition - Our review

Another RPG in isometric view ...

This is the first thought of many gamers as soon as they put their thumbs on the Joy-Con, on the other hand the Diablo style seems to have come out unscathed from all the wars between polygons in recent years.

In fact, this style of play still manages to keep a lot of fans attached to the screen, who, beating themselves up with competitions to "who makes it farthest", enjoy the long hours of gameplay that this type of games can offer.

Despite the style inspired by the famous Blizzard game, Victor Vran is a different title that can somehow complement Diablo itself.

From Bulgaria with fury.

Victor Vran was born from the minds of the guys of Haemimont Games, an independent development studio located in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The firm specializing in strategic titles (Tropico 5, Omerta just to name a few), has decided to take an “Action” turn and in 2015 launches Victor Vran on PC, Mac and Linux (here our review).

The title has managed to capture the interest of fans of the genre, so much so that they have to prepare a port on console, in the meantime the title "Overkill Edition" is added to the title.

Two years later the game arrives on consoles (PS4 and Xbox One), while the Switch version (the one we reviewed) arrived in the store on August 28th.

Screen

Compared to the release on PC a few years ago, nothing has changed, but for those who have never got their hands on the game, here is a small recap.

The story takes place in the city of Zagoravia, a dark place with a clear medieval inspiration.

The city has suffered a massive invasion of infernal creatures and needs the help of brave demon hunters, many have attempted the feat, but all have failed miserably.

Our hero, Victor Vran in fact, goes to Zagoravia not to defend the stronghold, but to find a friend of his, with whom he has not had contact for some time, but during this search he will still have to face hordes of infernal creatures.

Humour

Despite the seriousness that the environment would make necessary, the adventure is steeped in comic jokes, the protagonist himself is a born comedian, is particularly talkative and possesses the gift of self-irony.

All made perfectly by the dubbing of Doug Cockle, yes himself, the voice of the legendary Geralt of Rivia, who is perfectly suited to this type of solitary heroes.

gameplay

This Action RPG is also dedicated to newcomers to the genre, in fact since the initial choice of the type of character, the Haemimont guys have preferred a more versatile approach, which leads to a drastic reduction of time spent “wandering” around the menu.

The same has been streamlined and made understandable to everyone, even if the characters are a bit too small, often leading you to "kiss" the screen.

These choices could make the fundamentalists of the genre turn up their noses, despite this the presence of some action dynamics such as the replacement of weapons with the single press of a button and the lack of points to be assigned to the characteristics of your alter ego every time you climb. level, make the game faster.

Weapons and Combat System

To fight the forces of evil you need to be well equipped, and our Victor is armed to the teeth, from sickles to hammers through firearms such as rifles.

Each weapon is structured in depth, so that the player studies the pros and cons of the same and the effectiveness on that particular type of enemy. In addition, to enrich the potential of each weapon, there are special attacks, which will help the protagonist to make his way through the numerous enemies he will have to face.

These features manage to make the fight exciting, without leading to boredom, thanks also to a system of combinable cards.

Lonely heroes in company ...

In spite of the saying "better alone than badly accompanied", Victor Vran Overkill Edition offers two types of multiplayer, both locally with a friend, and online. It must be admitted that this welcome addition will increase the hours of gameplay spent in the cheerful city of Zagoravia hunting for precious treasures and fighting side by side legions of bloodthirsty demons.

We are Motorhead and we play Rock 'n Roll

Yes, we are talking about the famous British hard rock and heavy metal group, this particular expansion will see us explore 3 exclusive worlds dedicated to this unique band.

In addition to being accompanied by their legendary music, our protagonist will be able to dress up as Lemmy, Mikkey and Phil. In addition to the participation of the historic band, the game also hosts one of the most important film directors such as Lloyd Kaufman.

This DLC also adds some enemies such as: scorpions, cerberi and succubi, you can get rid of them thanks to the power of rock, guitars have been introduced, what about ... music will bury your enemies.

How beautiful it is to travel ...

The second DLC "The Broken Worlds", allows you to reach a new dimension, composed of Destroyed Kingdoms, even the most experienced demon hunters will have their teeth. The main new features of this DLC are:

  • Achievement of level 60;
  • Presence of Talismans, which will enhance your character;
  • Possibility to venture into an infinite level that offers as many interesting challenges.

Beyond these welcome additions, you can explore 4 dungeons that will be generated randomly every day.

Summary
Victor Vran Overkill Edition is an interesting action RPG title, the presence of the isometric view makes it a victim of the comparison with Diablo. Despite this heavy confrontation, Haemimont's children's game manages to offer at least fifteen hours of fun. The game also proves suitable for newbies thanks to the speed and ease of use, factors almost never part of this type of titles. This version then hosts two DLCs (Motorhead Through The Ages and Fractured Worlds), which will involve you and have fun. Furthermore, the possibility of playing in local co-op and multiplayer is extremely welcome, for unmissable adventures in company.
