Killzone: Shadow Fall, Guerrilla Games talks about the power of PS4

Pros and cons of the next-gen.

The Dutch team Guerrilla Games has been able to carve out its space within the Playstation world thanks to the Killzone franchise, which debuted on PS2, has had two chapters on PS3 and a spin-off on PSP and one coming to PS Vita, and is now ready with Killzone: Shadow Fall to be launched together with the console PS4 on the day of "day one".

In an interview written by EDGE, the team has pitted its design path by exposing the many positive sides that have come with the transition to the next generation of consoles, and also pointing out some negative sides.

Michiel Van Der Leeuw, Technical Director of Guerrilla Games, started with the name of the game, no number four, despite being the fourth installment of the series, but simply Killzone: Shadow Fall. The reason ? According to Michiel, “the team wanted to start from a new base, give a clear signal to the community of players, making it clear that what will come with Shadow Fall will be much more than a new chapter, but it will have many new features. We need a new starting point and this title is the right opportunity. What has been shown so far was all in real time, no pre-computed or packaged video. "

Hermen Hulst, Co-Founder of Guerrilla Games, added: “This time we didn't want any misunderstandings. What would be shown had to be what it really is. "

The team has now expanded. Michiel points out that the headquarters are in Amsterdam, while another part of the group works from London and yet another from Japan. "We are perfecting the sharing part with Facebook through the Japanese team, while in London they are working on other features." added Michiel.

“At the moment video streaming is the one that gives the most problems. Every time we fix a bug, we find three more new ones. It is unnerving. We are working hard to make this feature available at launch, but it doesn't work right now, we are rehearsing with colleagues in London and I'm very nervous. But there is time, don't worry ”, remarks Michiel regarding the SHARE function of the Dualshock 4 for publishing

The transition from PS3 and PS4 has resulted in several programming changes. New hardware. New architecture. Yet Guerrilla Games has managed to bring its "know how" without having to overturn it and exploit it even better. “The graphics engine has been revised but not changed. What could have been used before, now you can do even better and take advantage of greater effects. The animations are incredible and everything moves at 30fps with a naturalness and image quality that is a spectacle. "

It will therefore be a 30fps FPS, no 60fps. Guerrilla Games has opted for the solution with higher visual quality by sacrificing the framerate. A road test will tell us how correct this choice was.

“So far we've been dealing with dark, crumbling situations, while the video we showed you was lush. The story is set in the near future of the third chapter and I can assure you that it will not be all sunny. We wanted to take advantage of that moment of the game to show the computing power of PS4, how much it can show in terms of polygons and visual depth. ”, Reiterates Michiel.

So we should expect darker situations than the open and sunny ones of the session presented at the PlayStation Meeting. The Los Angeles event, E3 2013, will be a useful opportunity to see and try the title coming out in conjunction with PlayStation 4, during the 2013 holiday season.
