Splatoon 2 special, let's splat the bad guys in Salmon Run

Worthy sequel to a small masterpiece

At the time of the announcement of Nintendo Switch Splatoon 2 peeped out among the first titles designed for the new hybrid of the Kyoto house. And who expected, two years after the first Wii U game, that the atypical inker-based FPS would be back in our living rooms so soon?

Not to mention the added value of the portability of the new console, which will allow us to extricate ourselves between mollusc mushrooms and challenges to the last dye even on the bus, or in any case “when, where and how we want”.

But releasing a sequel in such a short time sometimes raises suspicions. In the field of FPS, then, it is difficult to scream at the novelty; and here is how not a few detractors have accused Splatoon 2 (of course long before its release date) to be repetitive, boring, everything already seen, a mere DLC of the first chapter.

Nothing could be more false, we can assure you: we had the opportunity to try the Splatfest last spring and as if that were not enough, between Nintendo Direct, E3 and press releases, Nintendo has done its utmost in order to prove that Splatoon 2 is, in fact, Splatoon 2 and not Splatoon 1.5.

Among the many new features related to weapons, accessories and maps, they stand out two new modes designed for both the single player that for multiplayer: the League Battle was unveiled just a few days ago and we know too little about it at the moment, but as for the very interesting Salmon Run enough is already known to wait with trepidation for next July 21st (release date of the title).

Hordes of Salmon

The first of the two nine game modes is Salmon Run. Inklings enjoy a way of painting everything, okay, but to make ends meet they also have another occupation for their free time: collect eggs. Salmon. Humanoid and ravenous salmon. Well it's a dirty (and wet) job, but someone has to do it.

This is a completely single player mode in which you can play for two to four players, even locally. In short, equip yourself with another pair of joycons (or a second Controller Pro), give them to your best friend and take the field. You will go on to a remote islet that will be attacked, wave after wave, by ravenous hordes of Salmonoids.

The objectives for the victory have now radically changed compared to the mollusc scrum: here there will be very little to color, rather, you will have to split the enemies and above all collect the eggs which they will release on the playing field. Carrying the latter in a container placed in the center of the arena will unlock the new wave, and so on until the end of the game and victory (if you manage to get it).

But if you think the task is easy, you are wrong. If you are playing with friends or online, communication will be fundamental to say the least to be able to win. Not only will the enemies attack you at the same time on multiple fronts, but they will also be differentiated into bosses and mini-bosses of varying power.

To knock down an Armored Salmonid, for example, you'll need to attack it from behind, while two other Inklings will distract it from the front. Add to all this that the gaming arena is timed and that from time to time the water that surrounds it will rise and fall in level, endangering the lives of our heroes, and you will understand how the level of challenge designed by Nintendo for this first single player mode of Splatoon 2 is calibrated towards the top.

We will certainly be able to tell you more in the review phase, for the moment we remind you that Splatoon 2 is expected for the next one July 21 exclusively on Nintendo Switch. Beware of imitations!
